[music]alright! this is john kohler with discountjuicers.com, today we have another exciting episode foryou, it’s always a good day at discount juicers when we get a brand-new dehydrator, and i not only got one dehydrator, i got two brand-new dehydrators to share with you guystoday. well actually they are the same thing, what this dehydrator is, this is the long-anticipatedsedona express dehydrator 11 tray, longer warranty than their previous model, and alot of new innovations that i’m really looking forward to. now there are two models, there’sthe sd 6280 and the sd 6780, they’re identical from the outside, the only difference is whetherit comes with the stainless steel trays or the bpa free plastic trays. so in any case, without further ado, let me go ahead and unbox
these guys, and we’re going to share withyou guys and teach you guys all about the new sedona express, some of the benefits andsome of the pros and cons of the unit. so i got both the sedona express dehydratorsunboxed, and here they are! they look identical except for one thing, this one on this sideis the 6280 and it has the bpa-free plastic trays, and over on this side it’s the sd6780, and it has the stainless steel trays. and that’s the only difference, everythingelse is identical to these models. if you want the stainless steel trays at the presenttime it’s going to cost about 70 dollars us more, in the united states. so i want togo ahead and show you guys these trays real fast, because that is the main difference.so if you want to get the stainless steel
trays, you’re going to get trays that lookexactly like this, and if you’re going to get the plastic trays, you’re going to gettrays that look like that. so personally i kind of like the stainless steel trays becausethere’s a much better air flow between the trays because there’s a lot more spacing, and on the plastic there’s a hole in the center that you’re going to lose a littlebit of square foot area, and then also the holes are not quite as big, plus obviouslystainless steel, it’s stainless steel and it’s a food-grade stainless steel, whereasthe plastic is a bpa-free plastic, but yet it is still plastic. so yeah, i like that.so aside from either the stainless steel trays or the plastic trays, the other thing that’sdifferent between the sd 6280 and the 6780
is the drip tray that’s included. so thesedona express dehydrator is 11 trays all the way down, and the bottom tray can eitherbe used as a tray, or you could actually put it in the drip tray. so in the case of thesd 6280, the one with the bpa free plastic trays, you get a bpa free plastic drip traythat can go right on the bottom, and then in the case of the 6780, you got a full stainlesssteel drip tray that once again, take the bottom tray out and it can go on the bottom.now the cool thing is, on the 6780, you could actually have the drip tray in place and youcould still actually get the screen in there so you could dehydrate, that really won’tquite work on this model here, because it’s just actually really tight, and by the timeyou do that there’s no space in between.
you know i think it would have been much wiserfor tribest to make more of a flat tray without much lips on the sides, or even just likea piece of silicone non-stick that actually just kind of goes up a little bit on the edgebut not that extreme, because you don’t get that many drips unless you’re beingnegligent in your dehydrator. alright so that’s the differences between the two models. onceagain, it’s either all plastic trays or all stainless steel trays plus the drip tray.so now i want to get into some of the different parts that are included with the dehydratorbesides just the main unit itself, and there’s only a few extra things that you’re goingto get. number one, you’re going to get the power cord, just a standard iec powercord, same power cord you may be using in
your desktop pc right now, it’s about sixfeet long, so i like it that they actually have it detachable, and making it a standardcord. the other things you’re going to get are the instruction manual and a recipe booklet, and this is really cool. this is actually multi-lingual, so it’s in spanish, german, french, and english all in there, plus you’re going to get your warranty card. and i wantto stop there for a second, i mean i want to encourage you guys to send in the warrantyfor your sedona express dehydrator, the sedona express dehydrator has a full 10-year warranty,so the previous sedona models, the sedona and the sedona combo, only had a five yearwarranty, this machine doubles the warranty so if for no other reason, this is a muchbetter deal because the warranty is twice
as long, which means you’ll be guaranteedyou’ll be dehydrating for the next 10 years trouble-free with the sedona express dehydrator.now aside from the instruction book which i do encourage you guys all to read, you alsoget a recipe booklet with about nine different recipes, so it will allow you to experimentwith some healthy recipes that you can make in your very own sedona express, and someof them to me look quite delicious, i think i want to make the kale chips, i love kalechips, one of the healthiest things you can eat, especially instead of potato chips. sothe last thing you’re going to get actually with the dehydrator is this guy right here, and no this is not a frisbee, that’s actually an extra filter for the dehydrator, so there’svery few dehydrators on the market, i think
the sedona’s maybe only the second one thati’m aware of that actually has a washable and reusable air filter so that you don’tget dust and other debris on the food that you’re dehydrating. and this is super-cool,it’s kind of taking it to the next level, you know are the filters necessary? i don’tknow, i say they’re necessary but it’s really nice to have one so that you rest assuredyou’re going to get the cleanest produce without any kind of bugs flung in there, orany kind of dust or anything i mean, if i think about it, you know inside my house lookspretty clean and tidy or inside an office building, looks pretty clean and tidy, youdon’t see any debris flying around, but yet when you change your air conditioner filteror your heating filter, your furnace filter,
right? you take it out every time and it’slike clogged up with gunk, right? that’s the stuff that could actually be getting ontoyour food when you’re dehydrating, if your dehydrator doesn’t have a filter like thesedona express does. so the next thing i want to do in this episodeis give you guys more of a close-up shot maybe on the stainless steel machine, because that’sthe machine that i prefer, and we’re going to go ahead and show you guys the inside ofthe machine, how it works, the control panel, and explain to you guys some of the featuresof this all-new sedona express dehydrator. so next what i want to get into is share withyou guys some of the specifications of the sedona express dehydrator. first we’re goingto do some measurements to let you guys know
how big it is. so one of the things i likeabout the sedona express is that it’s actually a nice and compact design, many dehydratorscan be actually quite big. and so the sedona, although it fits in 11 shelves is still quitedainty. so the width here on sedona is just a scant 12 inches, that’s only one footwide that’s amazing. and let’s see here, the height of the unit that’s approximately14 ⽠inches, so that’s going to fit under your standard american cabinets if you’resitting on your counter top. and the depth is approximately 17 ⾠inches, that beingsaid, it does actually have this really cool feature in the back, let me go ahead and turnthis around for you guys. i don’t know if you guys can see that here but it has theselittle bumpers here, and that basically is
letting you know that you want to set it outfrom the wall, you don’t want to crowd it and push it all the way up against the wallbecause there won’t be enough good air circulation, so i like that they actually have this feature,no other [inaudible] airflow dehydrator actually has this feature. now while we got the unitturned around here, you can see there’s a little connector for the power plug, it’sactually net, which is basically a ul listed certification, amazingly some dehydratorson the market don’t have ul certification. it’s 120 volts, 60 hertz and 470 watts,so that’s actually less wattage than other comparable nine tray dehydrators on the market.the other thing is the filter right here, so i want to show you guys the filter andhow easy it is to open it up and change it
out and to wash it if you need to.so to access the filter, all you’re going to simply need is a standard phillips-headscrewdriver, and there’s one screw that holds this filter in, and you’re just goingto go ahead and carefully unscrew this, and the cool thing is you can kind of look inthere and you can kind of see if it’s dirty or not. and basically once you unscrew it,you have the little filter here, so you would just take this out, and you get one extraone so you could just wash this when it gets all funky then you could actually use theextra one and they are available separately. but basically we take care of it, wash it,you should be able to use this for quite some time. and so back here you’ll see this iswhere the air is drawn through the filter
into the machine, i have gotten dehydratorsin the past where there is no filter and there’s a lot of dust and accumulation on the fan,on the fan coils, on the heating coils, and on the electronics of the machine, and thesedona express, this simply will not happen, so this means you’re going to have, it’snot going to really break, because it’s not going to have all that dust in there forthe electronics, but also the dust or debris or bugs on your food either, so that’s reallycool. and to put this back in basically you’re just going to line this guy up and put thatguy right in there, and there’s two little lines that you’re going to line on the top,and you’re just going to go ahead and put that screw in there and screw it back in.now you want to be careful when you’re screwing
this in not to cross-thread or anything, becausethis does thread into plastic so it’s not like you’re going to be taking this offevery couple of days. i mean depending on how much you use the dehydrator, you couldprobably end up cleaning this once a year, and it also depends on how dusty it is inyour environment. the other thing on the back is that there’s this little connector port.so this connector port’s really cool, that’s the back door to upgrade the software, soshould they need to upgrade the software or the programming on the sedona, unlike otherdehydrators that are dumb, you know they just have standard controls from the 1970s, thisis all computer controlled, and they can update the program as needed to improve your dehydrator.and tribest has done this in the past at no
cost, so you can see where other than maybehaving to ship in board to them, so they can upgrade it, and then send it back to you.so let’s go ahead and spin this guy around and share with you guys some of the featuresand give you guys a look of what it looks like on the inside of the sedona express dehydrator.so now i want to share with you guys the components inside the dehydrator, because this is whatmakes your dehydrator truly work. of course we’ll open this baby up and of course thefirst thing are the screens, i want to go ahead and measure these screens out for you,and the screens are 10 inches by 13 inches, and you have 11 of them, so that’s 1,430square inches of total usable space in there. and let’s go ahead and pull out these traysfor you and show you guys the all-new fan,
this is a quiet fan, it’s very important, some of the fans i’ve gotten in other brand dehydrators, it rattles and it’s just notsuper-high quality. i mean this is like a precision-built fan with that heating elementin the back, and unlike the original sedona and the sedona combo dehydrator that use smallermuffin-style fans, this has an all-new, looks like to me properly-sized fan, a single fanthat’s nice and quiet, and going to flow significantly more air in my opinion thanthe previous model. so if you are looking at a sedona, this is definitely the one youwant to get. alright so there it is right there, let me go ahead and show you guys thefan and the heating elements and the back panel inside.alright let’s go ahead and go inside the
dehydrator and show you guys what it lookslike. so there we are inside, as you guys can see there’s the back panel, and youguys can see the fan in there, so that’s one nice large fan, 7 inch diameter fan onthe inside, and that’s going to move a lot of air and the cool thing is there’s onlybasically two inches on the top, and each of the sides and the bottom where the fanblades to not extend to, so this means this is going to create literally a wind tunnelinside the dehydrator to move that warm air, and the heating element is actually behindthe fan to push the warm air through the dehydrator to dehydrate all your foods. alright so [inaudible]i wanted to show you guys the tray holders that holds the tray, they’re right thereon the side, and if we take a tape measure
and measure them, it looks like there’sabout one inch between each tray, now if you do have the stainless steel trays you willactually have more area, because the plastic trays are a little bit taller than the stainlesssteel units. i think other dehydrators on the market may have up to an inch and a halfof space in between, so this does limit you to the height that you can dehydrate, butof course the thing you can do, is you could always actually put in a dehydrator tray, and you know you don’t have to use a dehydrator tray immediately above it like this, whichyou would have about an inch of clearance, you could say you could put one up above, and now you’re going to have a full two inches of clearance, and say you want to putin something really tall, well you know you
could just stick a dehydrator tray all theway down here, and now you have a big space to put something in. now of course this isnot an oven, so don’t put anything that’s really thick, it needs to be like maybe apiece of kale that’s just curly or something like that, but if you put a loaf of breadand try to dehydrate it, it might dehydrate on the outside but the inside’s still goingto be really wet, so i do not recommend that. so the next thing i want to do is actuallyshare with you guys how to program and use the sedona express dehydrator. it has an on/offswitch over on this side, we’re just going to go ahead and flip that on, as you guyscan see it turns on. and the cool thing about the sedona express, unlike many other dehydratorson the market you open it up and watch this
closely – look at that! it has a littlelight inside so you can actually inspect whatever you’re dehydrating, that’s really cool.so even in the dark if you want to come out in the middle of the night and snack on yourkale chips, your raw food cookies that are dehydrating, you can come out with the lightsoff, push the door open, and you could come out and snack on all your delicious kale chips.i’ve made so many dehydrated treats, including granola, kale chips, cookies, crackers, andi’ll tell you more times than not, i’ll eat the food that i’m dehydrating beforeit’s even done, like sometimes in the middle of the night. i don’t recommend eating lateat night, but sometimes the stuff is so darn good. alright so they got the led light, ohyeah and then we got the glass door which
is really nice, you can actually look throughand see if what you’re dehydrating is done without actually opening the door and interruptingthe dehydration process, and it’s a nice tempered glass, really good weight. and sothat’s how this works. now let’s go ahead to the control panel, and the sedona expressdehydrator is fully computer controlled unlike many dehydrators on the market that are dumbdehydrators, this in fact is a smart dehydrator. so there’s several different modes of programmingthat we can get into that’s selected by this button, there’s basically three modesyou can set it up. there’s basically a fast mode, and the fast mode is like other dehydratorson the market where you just say “okay i’m going to set to 118 degrees, and dehydrate.â€and what’s going to happen is it’s going
to go at 118 is going to be like the average, and then it’s going to fluctuate above and below the 118 degrees to ensure that yourdehydration is done the fastest. so this is the mode that you’re going to want to useif you dehydrate something like beef jerky, fish jerky, turkey jerky, salmon jerky, anykind of jerkies. the sedona express dehydrator will peak up at 167 degrees all computer controlled, and i can’t say this for other dehydrators on the market. the usda has made a mandate, and certain kinds of meats need to be dehydrated at 160 degrees or 165 degrees at minimum temperaturefor food safety. so if your dehydrator’s not reached this hot of a temperature, thenyou must actually pre-cook your meats before dehydrating to ensure you kill all the badpathogenic bacteria on there. so i’m proud
to say that the sedona express is the firstdehydrator that actually exceeds the usda temperatures for dehydrating meats if youwant to do that. so that’s the fast mode, that’s mode number one. now for those ofyou guys that are health-conscious into raw foods, living raw foods, and you want to keepthe most nutrition in your food, this is a dehydrator that has the world’s first exclusivetechnology of raw mode. so we can go over here to the raw mode, and the raw mode basically, you can now set your temperature to 118 degrees, now instead of setting at 118 and it fluctuatingabove and below that, you set it at 118 and 118 is the ceiling, so now the temperaturewill fluctuate up to 118, never get hotter than 118, go down and go up and go down, andcycle. so this ensures you’re going to keep
the maximum amount of enzymes and nutrientsand phytochemicals in the food that you are dehydrating, so i really like that they dothis. now dehydration time will take a little bit longer, because it’s not reaching ashigh of peaks you know? but that’s all right. now if you want to have the best of both worlds, this has a special mode, and that’s actually if you hit the mode button, and the fast lightand the raw light light up, this is basically a combination mode or a tst mode, it’s atwo stage dehydration technology. and what this means is you can set two times and twotemperatures. so for example, if you’re into living in raw foods, you want to keepyour foods as raw as possible with the most nutrition as possible, you can set when youdehydrate something real water-rich like tomatoes
or watermelon, you can set it to run on thefast mode for the first two hours, so i like to set my dehydrator on the fast mode fortwo hours when i’m dehydrating something like tomatoes at 130 degrees. and becausethere’s so much water content in the tomatoes right when i cut them and put them in thedehydrator, even though the air temperature’s at 130, the food temperature is not goingto exceed 118 degrees, where it may minimize the nutrition and enzymes. so once you runthat for two hours, that gives the dehydrator a really good head start and cuts your dehydrationtime down which is going to save you money in the long run, and i run that for two hours, and then after two hours i’m like “okay a lot of the water’s getting evaporatedoff, i don’t want to risk getting too hotâ€
then you could actually dump it down to the118 degrees in the raw mode to complete the dehydration cycle. so this is going to giveyou the best of both worlds. and next you’ve got a few settings here, you could actuallyset the temperature and the time. and the other button here is for fahrenheit and celsius, right now the unit is in celsius. i’m not really a celsius guy, so i’m going to goahead and turn that off and we’ll go ahead and put it to fahrenheit that i can understand.so fahrenheit the temperature’s at 167, it’s actually in the fast and raw mode, let’s just go ahead and put it in the raw mode, simpler. and so in fahrenheit it’sset for 113 degrees for 10 hours. and all you’ve got to do is hit start. wow you guyshear that? i just turned the dehydrator on.
i’m not going to say it’s silent, butthat’s one of the quietest dehydrators that i’ve tested, and let me see here. if weopen up the door, the fan stops, but they have this little switch here. and actuallythat’s pushing a fair bit of air into my hand, and i can feel the warmth coming on.so that’s definitely really cool to know that that fan is working really nice and thisis a nice and quiet dehydrator. so basically this is going to run for 10 hours at 113 degrees.to stop it you’re just going to go ahead and hit the start on button, and say we wantto set that, we can hit the set button once, it’s going to flash on the temperature andyou can use these buttons to make it go down by increments of 10 or up by increments ofone. so we’re going to go ahead and get
it to 118 degrees, and then we’re goingto hit the set button, it’s going to go flash the timer, and now you can set the numberof hours, once again by 10s or by ones, and basically you can set it from one to 99 hoursof dehydration time, and unlike other machines on the market that are electronic that canonly go to a maximum of 99 hours, which i don’t know what you’d ever dehydrate for99 hours, you can actually go to a mode called “co†or continuous. so the continuousdehydration actually still has a ceiling or limit of 150 hours of dehydration which isreally, really, really long, and i don’t know what you’d need to dehydrate that long, but it basically just keeps it on, keeps it running infinitely, or for 150 hours. andso i always encourage you guys to experiment,
because that’s what it’s going to be about.everyone always wants to know “john, how long do i put in my tomatoes to dehydratefor?†well that depends on many different factors, right? depends on number one thetemperature, so you could dehydrate your tomatoes if you want at 130 degrees, you’re goingto lose some of the enzymes and maybe some of the nutrients because it’s better whendehydrated at a low temperature under 118 degrees. but if you—the higher the temperature, the sooner your food is dehydrated right? also it depends on the thickness of the slice.so if you slice really thin slices, like paper thin, it’s going to be done super quicklyright? and if you slice them really fat, it’s going to take significantly longer. anotherthing is about your current weather conditions
and climate conditions where you live. sofor example if it’s in the middle of the winter time and it’s 70 degrees and cold, then the dehydrator has to work, but if it’s like 80 or 90 degrees outside it’s warmer, and that’s going to work more effectively. another thing is the humidity in your area.so if it’s very humid, that’s going to work against the dehydrator, it’s goingto have to work a bit harder to pull the moisture out, and if you live in an arid climate whereit’s really dry naturally, your dehydrator’s going to work a little bit quicker, right?so you’re going to have to learn for yourself how long things take, and i really like thatthey have the glass door so you can actually look in to see if your item is fully dehydratedor not. so in addition to the trays that are
included with the machine, once again eitherstainless on the 6780 or plastic on the 6280 machine, you also have some solid sheets thattribest has available if you want to dehydrate things that are liquid, gooey or runny andmake things like raw food pancakes and raw tortillas and all this kind of stuff. so whati want to do next is actually share with you guys all the different options that tribestis offering, because most companies don’t have this many options.alright so now i’m going to get into some of the different dehydration sheets you canbuy as an accessory to your sedona express dehydrator. so as you guys know the trayslook like this, and they have hole spacing in there. say you want to dehydrate somethinglike wheatgrass juice, you make wheatgrass
juice, you want to dehydrate it so you canmake your own wheatgrass powder which actually sells for quite a lot of money. you cannotsimply just pour it on this tray, it’ll fall through. say you want to make some kindof raw food pancakes, or raw food tortillas you know, for wrapping up your food right?once again you cannot do that on this tray, so you’re going to need to have a solidsheet. so tribest has the most available options available today for non-bpa and food-safesheets at this time. so the first one they have is this guy right here, and this is justthe standard reusable non-stick ptfe drying sheet. and these guys are just standard sheetsthat many dehydrators have had in the past, because it does contain ptfe there may besome concern with it, but based on my research,
the concern is really when this is at reallyhigh temperatures, and low temperatures is like in the dehydrator it’s not really anissue. so you’re just going to go ahead and put this on the tray and now you coulddehydrate things that are liquidy or not quite as solid. one of the things i like to do,if i have wheatgrass, is i’ll actually just take it and i’ll just bend it up and putlittle edges on it. so yes that’s the reusable non-stick ptfe sheets that tribest has available.the next one they have available is this guy right here, and this is probably my favoriteone actually, this is known as the reusable silicone drying sheets. so silicone in myopinion is safer than the ptfe sheets here, and in addition it’s really cool, becauseon here actually they have scoring marks in
the sheet here, so basically every inch theyhave a scoring mark, so say you want to make little crackers you can dip, you could scorethem on the marks. in addition, say you want to make something like in a circle, they haveactually a little pattern here so you could actually make circles of different sizes, say you’re going to make some tortilla shells, you can actually just fill the batter in thecircle to make a 3.9 inch, 4.7 inch, 5.5 inch, 6.3 inch, 7.1 inch, 7.9 inch, or an 8.7 inchcircle. that’s really cool, and this stuff’s actually stretchable. and once again thatjust goes on the sheet on the tray, and now you can dehydrate on here. so i have testedthe ptfe sheets, i haven’t yet tested the silicone sheets for its release, you knowi do know that the ptfe sheets release very
well, so like sometimes i’ve tested siliconesheets in the past, and this is a new design that i haven’t tested yet, it doesn’trelease, so i will have an upcoming episode where i make a really gooey, chewy batter, and i’ll dehydrate it on all three of the different sheets plus some of the other onesthat i use in my home to show you guys truly the best dehydration sheet to buy that’sgoing to release your food, and that has the least amount of toxins. so yeah that is thereusable silicone drying sheets, and at this time, those are definitely my favorite, andof course the last kind that tribest has that they came out with the original sedona isthe reusable pp drying sheets. so these are a polypropylene, and these can also be usedfor a cutting board, because this is actually
what these are like, plastic cutting boardmaterial, and you once again just put these on your tray there, and you have a solid spaceto dehydrate things one. now one of the considerations for me about the polypropylene sheets is thatthese are a little bit thicker than the others, so you’re not going to get as good a heattransfer and things aren’t going to dehydrate quite as quickly. plus i have tested thesein the past, and actually things did not release properly, so if you want things to releaseproperly on these sheets, you may want to oil it up first so that it will release significantlybetter than without oiling it up. and i always want to encourage you guys to dehydrate ifyou can without the sheets. without the sheets you’re going to get better airflow in thebottom because of the holes and on the top,
whereas if you’re dehydrating with the sheets, you’re going to get some heat transfer from the bottom, but you can’t get the airflowbecause it’s a solid sheet, and you’re only going to get the airflow on the top.so this means it’s going to increase your dehydration time.[inaudible ] that’s pretty much it, at discount juicers we’ll have special offers for thedehydrator with the sheets included, they are an extra accessory that aren’t includedwith the standard machine. i mean overall so far i really like the sedona express dehydrator,it’s meeting all my needs, it has the led light, the stainless steel trays, 11 trays,a small footprint on your counter, works quietly, has that extra filter. i mean what else couldyou ask for in a dehydrator? i’m really
looking forward to getting this up and running,i have a lot of tomatoes right now so i might actually even get it running tonight witha whole batch of tomatoes to see how it works. and i’ll be sure to come back at you withupdates on how the dehydrator works, and i’ll have future episodes where i compare the sedonaexpress to the excalibur dehydrators so that you guys can see how they all work and whichone is truly the best. at this point i really like the build quality, the computer controlof the sedona express over some of the other brands on the market at this time. so i hopeyou guys enjoyed this episode, be sure to like this video if you liked it, be sure tosubscribe to my youtube channel for upcoming episodes where i do the testing with the differentsolid sheets as well as dehydrator comparison
testing, and be sure to check my past episodes,i have other episodes comparing the original sedona with the excalibur, as well as otherepisodes on the juicers and the blenders, which are all appliances that allow you toeat more fruits and vegetables, which is what the sedona express allows you to do as well.i hope you guys enjoyed this episode, and i want to encourage you guys to support meand my work by making your purchase at discountjuicers.com, once again my name is john kohler with discountjuicers.com,be sure to visit discountjuicers.com/youtube for special promotional offers for our youtubevisitors.
