(music) my name is basim mansour and i'mthe owner of a company called michael & son services inwashington, dc. a little over twenty years agoi took over a struggling family business when my fathersuddenly passed away. i was just nineteen years old. i've certainly experienced myfair share of financial struggles but through hardwork and determination i'm now running one of thelargest electrical, plumbing,
heating and coolingcompany's in the nation. every day my technicians comeacross some incredible people with heartbreaking stories. when they find they have nowhere to turn in a time of need that's when we come into lend a helping hand. [music] shadi. hey boss, how you doing? what's up, shadi?
i actually just got off thephone with home depot. what? home depot is doing thisbig project in haymarket for a food pantry. it's pretty unique, becausewhen you think of haymarket, you don't thinkof food pantries, but it's actuallya very busy food pantry that gets customersfrom all over the area. so they're having some plumbingissues and the main thing
that they need is a welland a fixed toilet. i think that partneringwith home depot this is a no-brainer.okay, let's just do it. what's the food bankabout, by the way? the food bank is the haymarketregional food pantry. what they do is incredible, because they let families they don't have anyprerequisites for anybody coming, and they stock all kindsof great food from local farmers who give meat, vegetables, allsorts of things like that.
and there's at least fourdifferent grocery stores that contribute to them. so they offerfamilies nutritious food, rather than just canned thingsand stuff like that. wow! it's great. now i'm actually hungry,so i think let's just do it. okay, let's do it. all right, let's go.
shadi, get out of here please. all right. i'm done with you. thank you. historical moments revealed. george, did you cut my wig? yes father, i cannot tell a lie. i can't do it. you can't, we can.
if you can't, we can. michael and son. george, did you cutthat tree down? father, i cannot tell a lie. he did it. we are at the haymarketregional food pantry. this is a place for people ofthe community and even the extended area can come whenthey're in need for food, staples, and even freshproduce and veggies. i love that i canhelp other people.
i hate this partbecause there's some people that come in thatreally need it. so that, for me,touches my heart. with the little that i do,gives back to them. i mean, we're ourbrother's keeper, right? sister's keeper? it's important ifpeople get involved to help in the community. i've been volunteeringwith them for two years now.
i got my kids involved. because we are 100% volunteerbase and we're christian base, we don't havethe same guidelines as any of thegovernment agencies do. it's such an easyway to get involved with your communityand to give back. we feed families up to 13,so it goes from 1 to 13, and each bin has theamount of food for 2 days. most of food in there,if you do it properly,
you should be able to feedyourself for 3 to 4 days because we provide theirspaghetti, and we give you meats and we give you cereals and justan assortment of things. we try to do our part to help. we've needed some renovationshere for quite a while and they're going to dosome great things here so we can serve people better. it's going to have clear areas, more refrigerators, more stocking areas, and we need it all.
anything to beautifythe place is always good. it's always good. for someone who's on her fourthyear here and not able to wash her hands or go to the restroom,i'm really looking forward to running water,so i think it's great. it's a wonderful opportunity. today we're coming in andbasically this place has been robbed of some pipes. there's no water to the place.
we're not sure if the well isfunctioning and not, so basically we're coming in. we're going to try toget the well hooked up. they have any power comingto this well over here, so we're going to be going aheadand doing a diagnosis, testing out the well, testing the pump out, checking the electrical line. i can tell here that it's beendamaged and cut right here at the entry whereit enters the well,
so we're going to take a lookfrom the electrical box and see what we can do, see if we can goahead and get it fixed up today. if the well works and we turnthe water on, we'll find out what's wrong from there and moveforward and fix all those leaks. call michael and son today andturn to the experts at carrier right now,get a precision tune-up on your heating systemfor just $69. if you can, we can.michael and son. one of the greatest moments intime is when we discovered fire.

the old electrical line, it wasdamaged, so we had to run a new one to get the pump upand working again. well, it's definitely going tobe a whole lot more sanitary. at least they'll have runningwater to be able to clean things up, use the bathroom. as far as the pantry itself,i think is a great idea. when we get running water andplumbing back up into our bathrooms, it's goingto make providing services so much easier for us.
right now we're limited withwhat we can do in the ways of cooking and maybe hopefullyproviding hot meals in the future and we haven'tbeen able to do that. open the valve on the toilet. i'm going to blow throughthis line here. put a 90 up and tie it inso i can secure it. basically what he did is heopened up the cold line on a faucet, and i believe that thepipe had let air go through. so when they were both off,air wouldn't go through
when he turned on the faucet. air went through,so we know that's the cold. the electrician got the wirefixed for the well pump. we turned that on. we got water coming inso we know that's good. so after that, what we didit we pressurized the system, turned the wateron to everything. made sure there wasno leaks on anything, and everything is good to go.
got water on, toilets areflushing, sinks are running. as far as i can see, there's noissues here anywhere. my name is erik dardas. i'm the regionalpro sales manager for home depotmid-atlantic region. we're out here today. we're renovating the haymarketfood pantry in partnership with michael and son and glidden, one of our paint vendors. we're doing a lot of interiorwork and some outside work,
just to make it a morepleasurable experience for the volunteers and thepeople that have to come out here and get the food. well, we got involved out here. we have a lot of storesin the local proximity to the food bank out here. it's one of our corevalues at home depot, and we found outthey needed help. we came running.
we love helping out onthese type of events because it gives us perspective. it gives us a lot of joy to helpout others that might need a little bit of helpbut don't always ask. we also wanted to help outbecause we know the volunteers that come out here, theapproximately 600 volunteers. we wanted to give them a betterenvironment in which to function, so they couldbe a more efficient help to the people that come.
i like helping people, that's why i became a plumber. i like to come in and fix whatever the issuesare and get out. it makes me feellike i've accomplished something every day. give back to the community. anytime you can thatand help out people when they're down and out. who knows? one day you might need help andyou might have to have someone
give you a hand one day, so it'salways good to pay it forward. it's one small step for man,one giant leap for mankind. we're setting up the flag now.houston, we have a problem. we can't do it.who in the world is that? there, we got the flag up now.you can't. we can. if you can, we can. michael and son. if you can, we can. michael and son. not just pizza, but something for everyone. paisanospizza.com

(music) jaja and erik, thanks forcoming out to me today.
first of all, thank you so muchfor home depot involving michael and sonin such a great project. we were really honored and proudto be able to help out at the food pantry. and i think that we now arecoming to the end of our work there, so we wantedto think the way to kind of rap everything up. and we thought that thebest way to do that would be with kind of a grand reopening.
i don't know how you guyswill feel about that, or if you guys have any inputon something like that. listen, we thinkit's an excellent idea. i think it's a great step in theprogress after you guys did all that plumbing work, which again,we are very appreciative of. just a tremendous commitmentfrom you guys on that. i like the idea, because i thinkit will bring more awareness to the food pantry, especiallyin the area that it's in. i think it's in one of thoseareas where people don't expect
there to be a food pantry, but it kind of highlights thatthere are needs everywhere. we're all in. we'd love to joinyou guys on that. we still have other workthat we want to do out at the food pantry as well. they didn't even have that wellhooked up to the house until you guys got out thereand made that happen. didn't have a working toilet.didn't have sinks.
didn't have garbage disposals, and this is a food pantry. so, just phenomenalwhat you guys did. and i think this could justbe a great celebration of all of that for that food pantry, and help bring awareness to the pantry, so that evenmore people will volunteer, take advantage of that. i think this could beone of those situations where you'll never know thetotal good that you've done until possibly yearsdown the road.
need to sell your housewith major repairs? we'll buy it as is. express homebuyers, we buy your house in seven days. how many ways canyou be comfortable? an energy-efficient infinityfurnace by carrier can cut your heating costby up to one-third. while also lessening yourimpact on the environment, which is betterfor where you live and better forwhere we all live.
call 800-948-mike orvisit michaelandson.com for a limited time, long roofingpresent free gutter system with every roof replaced. call now, 800-453-long. isn't it time you got a long. good morning everybody. it is a wonderful, brisk, cold morning, and i'm here at the haymarketregional food bank. they serve about2500 meals a month.
and we're here inpartnership with home depot to come out and helpthese great people. i know that home depot firstcontacted us about this job, and apparently this housedidn't have running water. so the people who come here andvolunteer would have to go to a local restaurant down the streetjust to use the bathroom. so, they told us, "hey, we needto help with running water." "we need you to fix the well." "we need you to fix this stuff."
we said we're going to do it.no worries about it. so, we're just gladto be part of it. i know that josh hasbeen in our office. he works for home depot forever.erik's a great guy. come on in.we'll show you the house. looks like a union convention. this is where we store all themeat. hi. this time of year we cut quite abit of deer meat, venison.
wow. yeah, the hunters forthe hungry group goes out. yes, my cousin helpswith that stuff. okay, all right, so we've gotquite a bit of that. this is the assembly room? this is the assembly room. hi, guys. how you doing? we're very lucky in that ourfolks love to work here
when our customers are here. and we have a whole other groupcalled maintenance that comes in the morning during the weekand restocks the shelves. just gets it together, gets it straight. those are the folksthat are here every day. those are the oneswho really do they do the real work. they do the work. here's the bathroomthat you guys fixed.
oh, look at that,it's beautiful. it's like a spa. it is now. the way this all started,we wouldn't be here doing what we're doing today if it wasn'tfor the first step in this process, which wasall the plumbing work that had to happen. so, one of ourservice providers, one of our great accounts, andyou see their vehicles all over
the community every day, whichis michael and son plumbing. literally, there was no watersupply to this facility, so michael and son took it uponthemselves to do all the labor to get this up and runningagain for this facility. in appreciation, because it wassuch a surprise to home depot that they stepped up to offer todo all the labor without even being prompted,so we put together just a small measure of our gratitude. not an apron, but ifyou want to work for us,
we can find you a position. so basim, your official titleis president and owner? no, i call myself proud son. proud son, but we've given them, for lack of a better term, the golden hammer award, apartnership in community service with home depot whichis very special. thank you, basim. i appreciate it. thank you so much.
we appreciate home depot'spartnership in that. also, we do these care shows,i don't know if you're familiar with that or not, but the bestthings about these care shows are that we actuallyhelp and inspire other people doing things. we've had contractors comein and put windows for us, put roofs for us,and build decks for us, and just do all kinds of things. so this is awesome, just to be asmall part of something great.
we really appreciate it. this facility and what eileenand everybody does out here, was a huge surpriseto me when i found out about it and what they do. i've got to tell you, you're out here today, and what you may do andyou may think is not menial, but we're puttingnumbers on polls, we're putting a coupleplants in, we're painting, we're doing all thisstuff we're doing out here,
but just know what you're goingto do for this organization and the volunteers that arehere and for what they do. hundreds of people a weekdepend on this facility for their food supply, for theirfamilies and their kids, that otherwise they don't have thewherewithal to sustain that. think about that for a second. when we're going to go home, and you'll have done this, and you may not have to worryabout where your next meal is coming from but the folksthat come out here do.
tonight, according to eileen, there is actually going to be an event where they're going togive away close to 500 turkeys to families today forthanksgiving that might not otherwise have a turkeyfor thanksgiving. i don't know about you,but i've never had to worry if i was going to have a turkeyor not for thanksgiving, but these people do. this is pretty incredible thatyou've taken the time to come out here, whethermichael and son, whether your
glidden, home depot, the foodpantry people that are here. this is powerful stuff, that you can make animpact on somebody's life. you'll go home, and you maynever get a thank you from anybody that comes out here, but you will have enriched their lives and thefolks that volunteer and are part of the food pantry. so, it's a credit to everybodywho's here in what you're doing. thank you very much for what youdo and for coming out here.
i know we've got newassociates out here. this is their firstevent with home depot, and this is incredible.this is our value, right? and i know michael and sonhas that same value. for the food pantry people, unfortunately for them, this is not the last they'regoing to see of me no problem with that. since i am alocal resident here, and so i'm signed upto be a volunteer.
i have to fulfillthat obligation and i'm going to come out hereand help them do whatever they need to continueto do beyond today. tonight, according to eileen, there's actually going to be anevent where they're going to give away close to 500turkeys to families today for thanksgiving thatmight not otherwise have a turkey for thanksgiving. ah man, that was great.
the great people of thiscommunity coming together and making a placewhere people could come who don't have a meal to eat.that's amazing. haymarket regional food bank.a big props to them. i'm so thankful that home depotinvited us on this thing. really glad to be part of it. nice to see all these greatvolunteers coming out and really giving their time to help thisgood, worthy cause out. the great people who work in thefood pantry every single day,
who come and stock the shelvesand who supply the food, i don't know,it makes me feel great to be part ofthis great community. we'll see you in the next one.
